tunnel’s guide to bruny island
Get ready to breathe in the world’s freshest air while discovering rugged coastal landscapes, rich wildlife and an epic gourmet food and wine scene. Divided into North and South Bruny by a slender strip of land known as The Neck, Bruny Island is a sanctuary for those seeking an escape from the ordinary.
Explorers will love hiking ancient paths like the Fluted Cape Walk, trying their luck at witnessing the Aurora Australis, surfing the beaches, or visiting the Cape Bruny Lighthouse.
Wildlife enthusiasts, we recommend taking to the sea on a wilderness cruise, heading to the Neck to spot penguins, trying to spot a white wallaby, or taking in the abundant flora and fauna right here at Tunnel. Our land and the water play home to dolphins, whales, seals, wallabies, quolls, echidnas, eagles and more.
For a more chilled pace, enjoy a slow morning on the deck with a coffee in hand, then head out to Adventure Bay to lay your towel on one of the many beautiful beaches and coves.
Our pick of Bruny’s restaurants for dinner is The Izzy Bar. Expressing how the locals grow, cook and eat, here you’ll find artisan bakers cooking wood fired pizzas, flatbreads and marinated produce. Book ahead to score a table in the flourishing garden and soak in the views with cocktails or local wine.
For a truly special evening, we highly recommend booking a private dining experience with Marefold. Showcasing the best ingredients Southern Tasmania has to offer, local chef Simon Ford will spend the evening in Tunnel’s kitchen preparing you a personalised feast. To book, please visit Marefold.com.
Bruny Island is all about gourmet local produce. While on the island, be sure to visit the Bruny Baker’s famous bread fridge, sample fresh oysters at Get Shucked, long lunch at Bruny Island Premium Wines and taste some of the world’s best cheese at Bruny Island Cheese Co.
Our favourite thing to do on the island is the Bruny Picnic Trail! Visit all the local suppliers and gather fresh cheese, pickles, bread, honey, beer and wine before returning to Tunnel to set up a picnic on our Peninsula Deck. We’ve even supplied a picnic basket and a Waverley Mills picnic blanket for you to use!
